scandinavian decorative painter

I am a Scandinavian decorative painter, trained at the Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, Iowa and influenced and inspired by Sigmund Aarseth and Dr. Marion Nelson. The objects I paint must feel good in my hand, with a pleasing flow to the form that inspires a creative response in me. My main interest is color and the layers of traditional back-grounding techniques that achieve high standards of finish and beauty.

I am a Gold Medalist from the Vesterheim Museum and have exhibited a the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Smithsonian Museum, the American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis, and the New York Museum of Folk Arts. I have taught all over the U.S., Canada and at the Milan Village Arts School.

Have you ever slept in a traditional Norwegian cupboard bed surrounded by rosemaling and carving? Or climbed three steps to sleep near the "Steps of Life"? If not, here's your chance. Trestuen is home to pine beams from my yard, carved dragons, and a stairway rooted and growing from the ship and animal forms of Scandinavia. It is my privilege to add color and designs to the fine work of traditional craftsmen in my beautiful gallery setting.
