Weaving Rugs with Diana Soehren

If you've thought about making your own rugs or table coverings but just never had the space to house a loom, here’s an opportunity to get inspired, learn how to start your project and get assistance when you need it most. Diana will help students set up to use the looms in the Loom Room. Students will learn the basics of preparing fabrics, choosing a design, warping and beginning to weave. Those who would like to continue their projects can schedule time with Diana on Saturday and Sunday to work on their projects from beginning to end.

Tuition: member $65 non-member $80
Supplies: $10 or more based on supplies used. The supply fee is paid to the instructor at the conclusion of class. Students should provide their own material.

Members who have taken this workshop have access to the Loom Room to work on their own projects.

Felted ScarfFelted Elements with Celeste Suter

Level: Beginner and above

In this workshop, students learn felting and piercing methods to make a free-form garment from wool without even needing to know how to knit, crochet or spin yarn! You will use wet felting techniques with merino wool and up-cycle a repurposed wool sweater to create one of a kind scarf. We will also make a felted flower to embellish your scarf. Students will learn the basics of nuno felting, needle felting, beading and combining deconstructed sweater pieces to make a show stopping garment.Those who would like to come Friday evening can get a jump start on learning felting by making a felted bar of soap at no additional cost.

Tuition: member $75 non-member $90

Locker Hooking with Celeste Suter

Locker HookingLevel: Beginner and above
Date: Saturday March 17, 2012

Using grid canvas, string, strips of fabric, wool or yarn and a special locker hook, you will learn this age old technique used for making rugs, wall hangings, pillows and more. Students choose a pattern, design a chart and learn how to read and work their chart to make a useful and colorful pot mat. You will learn how to join strips, change colors and work in ends. Techniques can then be used by the student at home to make rugs and many other projects. Additional supplies and books for home use will be available for sale after class so you can work on additional projects at home.

Caring for Your Heirloom Textiles with Maureen Hark

Level: Beginner and above

Textiles are a part of our every day life, from tea towels to christening gowns. Passed down from generation to generation, many have strong sentimental value while others have artistic or historical interest. We are often torn between wanting to use them or to tuck them safely away. How we care for them today will make a difference.

This class will give you the decision-making tools to better care for your treasured heirloom textiles. A limited number of participants can bring one textile to be prepared for storage. Instructor will contact participant ahead of time and supply fees will be individually determined.

Handouts will be available.

Basic Leatherworking: Make a Sheath or a... with Jon Roisen

Make a sheath for an axe or chisel, or a favorite knife that no longer has a sheath. You can even make a special tool pouch. Bring a tool that you want to use for the project. Make a Norwegian pencil bag that you can use to store small tools or a drawstring bag of soft leather for all your gold coins. Various leathers will be provided, as well as all leather tools, punches rivets and snaps.

Tuition: $90 member $105 non-member

Broom MakingBasic Broom Making with Robin Moore

Level: Beginner and above

Few things are as satisfying as making your own beautiful tools for daily use. Brooms have been made by hand for centuries. Students in this class will learn a simple way to create a broom from raw materials. The broom you make will last for years and you’ll never buy another at a store again. Students may bring wood for their handle or choose from those provided. However, if you do want to bring your own wood, please contact Robin first. Brooms will be between 12 and 42 inches long according to preference.

Tuition: member $60 non-member $75

Savory Breads with Maureen Hark

Artisan BreadLevel: Beginner and above
Date: Saturday January 21, 2012

Using a simple no knead bread recipe, we will make pizza, foccacia, and other savory breads using local and easily found ingredients. This recipe can be mixed up ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator ready to use. Participants will go home with several samples of fresh baked bread and a batch of dough to experiment with.
Bring an apron and your favorite bread bowl!

Tuition: $50 Includes the tuition and supply fee
