Sami (Same) Inspired Bracelets with Norma Refsal
Level: Beginner and above
Date: Saturday, February 9, 2013
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Registration Deadline: January 26, 2013
Location: Milan Community Center
The indigenous Sami People can be found in Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. The Sami lived on the land before the rest of the Scandinavians arrived.
There are many Sami (formerly called Laplanders) who live near or above the Arctic Circle and
own herds of domesticated reindeer. Reindeer husbandry is a big part of their livelihood.
Sami artisans make beautiful items of reindeer leather with antler details. They then embroider them with spun pewter thread (nickel free alloy with 4% silver). The bracelets are fastened with antler buttons made of shed reindeer antler tips.
We will work in leather, pewter thread and antler, constructing a bracelet that can be finished in a one day course.
The work is very close hand work, and if you need magnification, you will need to bring your own.
All other materials will be provided for use during the class.
Tuition: member $75, non-member $90
Supplies: $50. The supply fee is paid to the instructor at the conclusion of class.
