Os Style Rosemaling with Clarice Dieter

Os style of rosemaling uses bright, happy looking colors originating from the Western part of Norway in the Hordaland area. In Class 1, students will paint a free-standing ball clock, 12” high x 6” wide with a pattern. In Class 2, students will paint a tray, 8” x 16”. Both would be a lovely addition to your home. If time permits, students will paint an ornament in the Os style. Beginners are welcome.

Rosemaling Natural Edge Bowls with Clarice Dieter
Date: Monday through Thursday
August 2, 3, 4 & 5
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Note: Students must register early in order to allow adequate time to order bowls. Shipping times vary.
The natural shape of the hand-crafted bowls prompts students to use their imagination and think in a new way as they apply the techniques and colors of Scandinavian rosemaling. Students will learn how to prepare the bowl’s surface by varnishing and glazing but leaving some of the wood grain visible. Students may wish to use silver, gold or bronze as well. Students will be working on three bowls during this class to give time for each to dry between coats. Once the bowls are dry, students will be rosemaling their own designs following the structure in the wood and glazing in the Telemark style.
Tuition: member $125 non-member $140
Cost of the bowls is $34 each or $102 plus shipping.

Rosemaling Design with Karen Jenson
Date: April 9, 10 & 11
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Registration deadline: April 1
Design is fundamental to successful rosemaling. But instead of buying a pattern, let’s design our own! Students will start with pencil and paper and learn the basis for Telemark style. The shape of the scrolls are determined by the shape of the object they are painted on and the shape of the flowers are determined by the space they have to fill. Once you are comfortable with your design, then move on to painting a project of your choice. All skill levels welcome.
This 3 day class will include a trip to Karen’s Trestuen Gallery and Studio to enjoy a beverage and Scandinavian treat.
Tuition: member $225 non-member $240

Painting Gnomes with Karen Jenson

Gnomes have traditionally been an important part of Scandinavian folklore. These little people do good deeds and bring joy to the lives of everyone. Having gnomes in your house or garden is a must and painting them is easier than you think. Students will start with pencil and paper and progress to acrylic or watercolor on canvas, wood or paper. All skill levels welcome.

Scandinavian Cuisine 1: Potato Klub and Rommegrot with Ann and Deloris Thompson

Scandinavian Cuisine 2: No Knead Artisan Bread, Norwegian Fiske Soup, Wild Rice Soup and Norwegian Cream with Nancy Strand

Freshly baked No Knead Bread is a favorite at Nancy’s Aslak & Annie’s Bed & Breakfast. It’s easy and it’s delicious. While the bread is baking, learn 2 sumptuous soups. Norwegian Fiske (fish) Soup is a Norwegian favorite and Wild Rice Soup is a Minnesota favorite. But wait, there’s more! To round off the meal, Nancy will teach you how to make Norwegian Cream desert. At the end of class, sit down for lunch and enjoy the prepared dishes.

Norwegian Knife Making: Beginning with Jon Roisen

In this class, students will have the opportunity to make a fine “tollekniv” – a Norwegian work knife. Students will work with “Flame Birk” Norwegian birch burl and Italian leather. At the end of the class, students will have their own knife and sheath.

Norwegian Knife Making: Advanced with Gene Tokheim

Returning students will have the opportunity to hone their skills, using more advanced techniques that take more time to learn and execute. Students will practice details including making silver-tipped Bunad knives, using bone and birch bark stacked handles, Damascus blades, and the use of sterling silver, birch bark, and reindeer horn.

Skijoring with Kurt Arner
Dates: Saturday & Sunday, February 6 & 7
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Skijor is the Norwegian word that means “ski-driving”. Skijoring is a winter sport in which a person wearing cross-country skis is drawn over the snow by one or more dogs. It combines dog sledding with cross-country skiing. You will learn training techniques for guiding your dog over pristine snow-covered trails. Basic equipment includes cross-country skis, a harness for the dog, a skijor belt for you, tug lines, and a dog (30 lbs. min. recommended). Virtually any breed can learn to skijor. Any dog that loves to run is a good candidate. From a dog’s perspective, skijoring is as much fun as a walk times ten. You should have some cross-country skiing experience before learning to skijor. After registering you will receive some training tips to work on before starting class.
