Sitting in the sun on the spacious front porch of a 1915 school house meticulously restored in the traditional Norwegian style, or sitting outside in the evening around a roaring fire – always among friends. That is one way to describe the annual gathering of the spoon carvers each June in Milan.

Some 10 years ago, Frank Foltz d.2009, artist, teacher and spoon carver, hatched an idea for a unique green woodworking event. In 2007, 24 people came together to celebrate the first annual Spoon Gathering at the Kromvig School for Craft. The following year, the event was moved to Milan where it has been hosted by the Milan Village Arts School ever since. What started as a small gathering of spoon carvers and enthusiasts in St. Paul has grown into a vibrant and entertaining weekend of carving, friendship, and food.
In June of 2016, artisans, artists, and spoon enthusiasts will again gather at Burns Park and the Milan Village Arts School to carve, learn, and share their passion for the humble spoon, an international symbol of family, meals, and friendship.
Join us for a weekend of demonstrations and friendship. Bring your spoon blanks and carving tools or just come to watch and enjoy the weekend. All levels of experience welcome and absolute beginners will be well cared for.
Spoon Gathering participants are encouraged to bring spoons along to put on display.
